After DH's morning lesson (held in the state of the art lecture hall -- her hotel room ) defining culture, the lead study abroaders were chomping at the bit to hit the streets of Hanoi. We explored the Old Quarter, shopping and finding our bearings for a few hours before departing for the day's true adventure.
We took [our lives in our hands] a caravan of taxis to Southern Hanoi--where Hanoi University is located (the yellow building in the background).
We climbed three flights of narrow stairs to a flat where we sat down for tea with several university students involved with Hanoi Kids, a highly selective student-run organization. We spent several hours speaking with the representatives from Hanoi Kids. Our conversation helped us gain a better understanding of Vietnamese culture, family dynamics and their rigid education system. In two weeks we will be providing a workshop on American Leadership Styles for their organization--when we explained that we incorporate fun into our learning their eyes lit up. We're looking forward to showing them strategies to better lead their organization. We also made plans to spend an afternoon with a few of their members in order to tour some of the historic sites and museums around Hanoi.
